The Petersfield Map
1994.
Commissioned by the Hampshire Sculpture Trust. Funded by local bodies.
The mosaic map was part of a scheme to renovate a street, updating
the road, pavements, street furniture and planting. The map is 3.5
metres long, 2.1 metres high, and is in a prominent position by
the main bus stop.
Designing
the mosaic involved holding a public consultation meeting ( which
was well attended), visiting a youth group, and holding workshops
in some of the local schools; from these I gathered suggestions
as to what should go on the map. The children also learnt about
mosaics and experimented with making one themselves. Further research
for the map involved contacting the local history society, and visiting
the library and other local interest groups.
The
mosaic was made from unglazed ceramic and gold leaf tesserae. It
was constructed back in the studio with two assistants, using a
paper-on-face technique (the mosaic pieces temporarily glued face
down on to brown paper, then the mosaic embedded in adhesive on
site, the paper soaked off, and the mosaic grouted and finished
off). Installation on site took approximately four days.
The
mosaic was designed to combine a decorative quality with a practical
purpose. I was influenced not only by an ancient mosaic map of Jerusalem,
but also by modern map symbols and icons. The map gave relevant
information about the town and also set it in a historical context.
